Guidance from the Universal House of Justice:
“It is correct that citizens of the People’s Republic of China who accept the Faith are not required to formally enroll at this time. In the specific case of a Chinese citizen residing outside of the mainland, he or she should be left free to decide whether to enroll officially or not. In other words, a Chinese citizen may be accepted as a Bahá’í in good standing on the basis of his verbal declaration of faith, even if he does not wish to be officially registered as a believer with an Assembly. This policy applies to all Chinese citizens residing outside of the mainland, irrespective of whether they have permanent residence status in another country.”

For Stars -《We Are All Beautiful People》：http://www.verycd.com/topics/62546/

(Updated:13:00 May 5th. 不知是不是我骂海南骂得太多了，修改后发表要审核了…)

“Woo.. it’s really surprised to know what u’ve inform me, you wanna move back to China buddy, don’t u? So.. is this your final decision? Will you be able to get another job here? Oh! try not to give up so soon. I found that most of the locals are selfish as well, and do totally agree with you. Especially half in my class are Singaporean, they’d ignore the situation when i’ve got some requests from them. It’s unbelievable for what they do this to me ha. i was stupid to trust them in the last two months. Right now it’s time to understand that what’s F. system working with those of the F. people neither. I have the same feeling as yours. Only as your friendship and encourage can spirit my soul keep pushing myself to aim on my mission also. Otherwise i’ve already given it up right from the beginning. That’s why I don’t want u to consider leaving so early. Just try your best till last minute.”

As we watch the horrific scenes beaming back from China, we cannot help but share, through our common humanity, the sorrows, pain, helplessness, loss and emotional traumas of the victims.

Apart from offering material assistance through international aid agencies, we can also assuage their sufferings spiritually through our prayers.

The Bahá’ís of Singapore are coming together 7.30 pm Saturday 7th June at the SCWO Centre (96 Waterloo St.) to do just that.

Come join us in our devotional offering, followed by a short talk and light refreshments.
When You’re Gone

I always needed time on my own
I never thought I’d need you there when I cry
And the days feel like years when I’m alone
And the bed where you lie is made up on your side

When you walk away I count the steps that you take
Do you see how much I need you right now

When you’re gone
The pieces of my heart are missing you
When you’re gone
The face I came to know is missing too
When you’re gone
The words I need to hear to always get me through the day and make it ok
I miss you

I’ve never felt this way before
Everything that I do reminds me of you
And the clothes you left, they lie on the floor
And they smell just like you, I love the things that you do

When you walk away I count the steps that you take
Do you see how much I need you right now

We were made for each other
Out here forever
I know we were, yeah
All I ever wanted was for you to know
Everything I’d do, I’d give my heart and soul
I can hardly breathe I need to feel you here with me, yeah

Watch and listen to TV and radio programmes

British Council LearnEnglish in Listening
Listen to stories, articles and poems, all with audio scripts

Listening tips

Listen to the radio news or watch a television news programme at the same time every day. How many stories are there? Note down what each story is about (think: when, where, who, what).

If you can, record the programme and listen to/watch it again to check details from the first time. You cannot do this in “real life” but it is very useful practice and it means you find out what you got right the first time and this will boost your confidence.

Alternatively, record a news programme without listening to/watching it. Then play only the headlines. Stop the tape and predict what the stories will be about. Then listen to check your predictions. Use one of the stories as a dictation text. Listen several times and write down what you hear.

Don’t force yourself to listen for too long. Set yourself realistic goals. For example, when listening to the weather forecast, just listen for the temperature and weather conditions for your city/area for the next day. Don’t worry about information which won’t affect you.

If there are similar programmes in your language and in English, compare them. Is the content exactly the same? Are the opinions given similar? What are the differences?

Native listeners don’t often listen to or understand 100% of what they hear. Non-native listeners shouldn’t try to either. Work on strategies to find out what people are talking about – listen for clues about the topic, the speakers’ opinions/feelings and the type of relationship they have (eg boss and employee, colleagues, wife and husband). Practise on the bus by eavesdropping on (secretly listening to) other people’s conversations. Or, try to work out what a tv/radio programme is about when you’ve missed the beginning.

If you are watching an English-language film with subtitles in your language, listen to check if the subtitles are accurate. Are they a direct translation or just a summary of what is said? If you hear a bilingual announcement, is the grammar exactly the same? Notice the differences and the similarities.

Watch a television soap opera every day so you get to know the story and characters. Knowing the background and context makes listening easier.

Enjoy listening. Use an English-language workout video and “kill two birds with one stone”. Listen to songs in English and learn your favourite lyrics.

Page top

Speaking and Pronunciation

BBC Learning English (Watch and Listen)
Pronunciation advice and practice

British Council LearnEnglish in Listening
Listen to a pronunciation poem

Speaking tips

Become aware of how native speakers behave and copy them.
Watch a native English speaker’s mouth on television. Note what shapes they make and try to copy them. Listen out for characteristic “English” sounds and copy them too. What noises do they make when they are thinking? How do they take turns to speak? What happens to their voices when they get angry or embarrassed? Do they only smile in certain situations or with certain people? All these things are just as important as the words they use.

Ask a native speaker you know to help you with English you don’t understand.
Keep your questions simple and don’t expect your friend to know their English grammar as well as you do.

Talk to yourself in the mirror
Sing your favourite songs in English to copy the native speaker sounds. Have a set of general topics to choose from and take a new one each day.

Try to think in English
Ask yourself: How would I say that in English? How could I explain that idea to an English speaker?

Set up a conversation group
Meet regularly to talk in English. If you are preparing for an oral exam/interview, ask one friend to practise the interview with you and another to listen and give you constructive feedback on your performance. Then swap roles. Keep your conversations on topics you are familiar with. If you don’t know what to say, change the subject or keep quiet until you feel you can contribute easily again.

Write familiar conversation topics on cards.
Take a card and speak about the topic for two minutes. Record yourself and then listen, checking for things you could improve. Next time you take the same card, can you speak more confidently?

Learn some English: sentences which you need again and again.
Practise so that you can say them in conversation without having to worry.

Page top

Vocabulary

BBC Learning English
Understand words in news stories

British Council LearnEnglish
Magazine articles to read.

Vocabulary tips

Learn five words a day.
Note them in a small diary, five words for each day. In this way you quickly build up a large set of vocabulary. If you keep the diary in your pocket, it is easy to review it on the bus or in a queue.

Create a personal dictionary.
Use a notebook to organise your vocabulary. Decide how you want to sort out the words:

parts of speech (eg all the adjectives together)
topic area (eg food, crime)
function of the language (eg suggesting, complaining)

If you use an address book with A-Z dividers, you could make an alphabetical sequence.

Keep a scrapbook of headlines, articles and advertisements
Include vocabulary that interests or amuses you. Write down phrases you hear on television or read and note the context they were in.

Use pictures to record idioms
Draw a cartoon picture to make each expression more memorable: eg “a storm in a teacup”.
Use the idioms to label a poster of your favourite singer or actor. Put “He pulled her leg” next to the leg, “She has no heart!” next to the heart, “She didn’t believe her eyes” next to the eyes, and so on. This may help you remember them better.

Make vocabulary cards
Write the English word on one side and the translation in your language on the other. Prepare the cards with new vocabulary and then use the cards to test yourself. Look at the English word and try to remember the translation.

You could also try to explain the meaning of the word (How would a dictionary define it?) or think of a sentence including the word. This is another activity which is easy to do when you have a few minutes of free time if you keep the cards in your pocket or bag.

Page top

Reading

BBC Learning English in the news
Choose a topic and click on Reading

British Council LearnEnglish in reading
Read magazine articles on many different topics

Reading tips

Remember that there are different ways of reading
Think about the process of reading. When you skim read, you just get a general idea about the content. If you are looking for something particular, for example the name of your team on the sports pages, you scan the text for more detail.

Read actively
When you do any reading, predict what the text is going to be about from the title or the pictures. After you have read the text, do something with the new information you have, think about these questions:

Who is the article about?
Where and when is the article talking about?
What are the main points of the article?
What kind of people would find the article interesting to read?
What is your opinion of/reaction to the article?
Share your understanding
If someone you know has read the same article, talk about it with them. What do they think? Do you agree with them?

Read the same material in English as you would in your language
If you enjoy reading about fashion in your language, read about fashion in English too. You will already understand some of the vocabulary and ideas and have a good background knowledge. Conversely, if you hate films and never go to the cinema, reading an English-language film review will probably not be a useful exercise for you because you won’t enjoy it.

If you have access to the same material in your language and in English, compare the two versions. How has the translator expressed the same idea in the new language? Is it a good translation? What would you change? Are the texts exactly the same?

Set yourself a reading target
Reading one article every day is better than reading a whole paper only once a fortnight. Ask your teacher to recommend suitable materials.

Grammar Games

Grammar tips

Read & listen to English every day
Reading and listening to natural English will expose you to a lot of new grammar in a natural context. Find magazines that interest you, watch films in English and read simplified readers with tapes, or do the crossword in the newspaper.

Try to work rules out for yourself
Try and work out rules for yourself before checking in a reference book. If you try to work things out for yourself first, this will help you remember it better. It’s also good practice as you won’t have a reference book with you all the time, so you’ll often have to guess the meaning of unknown words.

Keep a notebook
Have a separate notebook for grammar. When you come across sentences or paragraphs with good, clear examples of structure and grammar, write them in your notebook. Grammar rules need good examples to help you to better understand. Don’t just learn the translation. Practise using the grammar and vocabulary in the right context in written and spoken sentences.

As well as writing in a notebook, try to stick what you’ve learned in a place where you often see it. For example, you could stick it next to your mirror in the bathroom. While you’re brushing your teeth, read through the list and try to remember them. You could stick words on the walls or beside your computer.

Learn words in groups or phrases
There are many words in English that go together. Try to learn words together with their partners and not words on their own, e.g. phrases (brush up your English), adjectives or verbs with prepositions (interested in, listen to, verb and noun collocations - do your homework).

Page top

At this moment, I can’t find the lyrics of “One Planet One People Please” in second part of the video ‘We will have one world’ below.

We are one
In a bombed-out room in Belfast
A young boy is crying.
He’s alone, and he don’t understand
How the teachings of one book built on love and understanding
Could cause the hurt and killing in his land.

In an old part of Jerusalem
Two children are playing.
They run and laugh the way that it should be.
But one will wear the star and one will wear the crescent.
They’ll grow up and change from friends to enemies.

But we are one, the flowers of one garden.
We’re one, the leaves of one tree.
Let the walls come down.
Stand here together.
We are one family.

In a Pakistani village
A young boy on crutches
Takes a fall and lies helplessly there.
And he holds out his hand but no one will take it.
They won’t touch him or the clothes that he wears.

On a side street in Selma
A black child is sitting
In a squad car protected from the whites.
‘Cause they’re burning a cross to send her a message.
You can see the fear in her eyes.

But we are one, the flowers of one garden.
We’re one, the leaves of one tree.
Let the walls come down.
Stand here together.
We are one family.

Ponder in our heart how we were all created
From the same dust, the same dust.
Searching we will find that the Spirit of the Age
Has come to find us, to find us.

We are one, the flowers of one garden.
We’re one, the leaves of one tree.
Let the walls come down.
Stand here together.
We are one family.

We will have one world
We will have one world, Bahá’u’lláh
For the great day of peace has come

**Chang ‘one world’ to:
(2) Justice (3) Equality (4) Unity

I like the paragraphs in which mention about Eddie:

“Eddie was different.”
“You mean, he didn’t hate?”
Sam continued. “Eddie was a tender child. He was like his mother. There was a black family on our place. The Lincolns. Joe Lincoln had worked for us for many years. One of the boys, Quince, was the same age as Eddie, and they were best of friends. When Eddie started school, he got real upset because he rode one bus and his African friend rode another. He was always asking questions about why the African in Ford Country was so poor, and lived in bad houses, and didn’t have nice clothes, and had so many children. He suffered over them, and that made him different. I tried to explain things to him.”
“Such as?”
“Such as the need to keep the races separate. There’s nothing wrong with keeping Africans in their place. Eddie left home when he was eighteen.”
“Did you miss him?”
“Not at first, I guess. We were fighting a lot. He knew I was in the Klan by then, and he said he hated the sight of me.”
“You thought more of the Klan than of your own son?”
Sam stared at the floor. “He was a sweet kid,” he said quietly. “We had an old boat and used to fish, that was our big thing together. Then he grew up and didn’t like me. He was ashamed of me, and of course it hurt.” He looked up at Adam. “What kind of father was he?”
“I don’t know. That’s a hard question, Sam.”
“Why?”
“Because of the way he died. I was mad at him for a long time after his death, and I didn’t understand how he could leave us, how he could decide we didn’t need him anymore. And after I learned the truth, I was mad at him for lying to me all those years, for changing my name and running away. It was terribly confusing for a young kid. Still is.”
“Are you still angry?”
“Not really. I try to remember the good things about Eddie. I guess he was a good man, a good father who just had this dark, strange side to him.”
“Tell me about his death. How did it happen?”
Adam waited a long time before answering. “He was going through a bad time. He’d been in his room for three weeks, hiding from the world. Mother kept telling us that he was getting better, soon he’d come out. We believed her. He picked a day when she was at work and Carmen was at a friend’s house, a day when he knew I’d be the first one home. I found him lying on the floor of my bedroom, still holding the gun. One shot in his forehead. There was a neat circle of blood, and a typed not beside him. The not was addressed Dear Adam. It said he loved me, that he was sorry, that he wanted me to take care of the girls, and that maybe one day I would understand. He asked me to clean up the mess and call the police. Don’t touch the gun, he said. And hurry, before the girls get home.” Adam cleared his throat and looked at the floor.
“And so I did what he said, and I waited for the police. We were alone for fifteen minutes, just the two of us. He was lying on the floor, and I was lying on my bed looking down at him. I started crying and crying, asking him why. There was my dad, the only day I would ever have. I heard voices, and suddenly the room was filled with police.”
Sam was leaning on his elbows, one hand over his eyes. There were just a couple more things Adam wanted to say.
“Lee stayed with us after the funeral and told me everything. I couldn’t stop thinking about you and the Kramer bombing. It took about a year for me to figure out why Eddie killed himself when he did. He’d been hiding in his room during your trial, and he killed himself when it ended.”
Sam removed his hand and stared at Adam with wet eyes. “So you blame me for his death, right, Adam? That’s what you really want to say?”
“No, I don’t blame you entirely.”
“Then how much? Eighty percent? Ninety percent? How much of it’s my fault?”
“I don’t know, Sam. Why don’t you tell me?”
“Just add my son’s name to the list, is that what you want? The Kramer twinc, their father, then Eddie. That’s four I’ve killed, right? Anyone else you want to add?”
“Dead bodies?”
“Yes. Dead bodies. I’ve heard the rumors.”
Sam jumped to this feet and walked to the end of the room. “I’m tired of this conversation!” he shouted. “And I’m tired of you! Here I am twenty-three days away from the chamber, and all you want to do is talk about dead people. Just get out of here!”

On 13th May, James Blunt will perfomance at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. The first song I heard from him might be the famous one was the “You’re Beautiful“. And this “Cry” I just started listening this morning is fantastic.

James Blunt - Cry
Resting on the shoulders of your name.
Do you see the truth through all their lies?
Do you see the world through troubled eyes?
And if you want to talk about it anymore,
Lie here on the floor and cry on my shoulder,
I’m a friend.

I have seen birth. I have seen death.
Lived to see a lover’s final breath.
Do you see my guilt? Should I feel a fright?
Is the fire of hesitation burning bright?
And if you want to talk about it once again,
On you I depend. I’ll cry on your shoulder.
You’re a friend.

You and I have lived through many things.
I’ll hold on to your heart.
I wouldn’t cry for anything,
But don’t go tearing your life apart.

I have seen fear. I have seen faith.
Seen the look of anger on your face.
And if you want to talk about what will be,
Come and sit with me, and cry on my shoulder,
I’m a friend.
And if you want to talk about it anymore,
Lie here on the floor and cry on my shoulder,
Once again.
Cry on my shoulder,
I’m a friend.

BAHA’IS TO ELECT UNIVERSAL HOUSE OF JUSTICE

HAIFA, Israel, 22 April 2008 (BWNS) — A global election process that began with people in 100,000 cities and villages around the world will culminate on 29 April when delegates gather here to elect the international governing body of the Baha’i Faith.

Representatives of some 170 nations will cast ballots for the nine members of the Universal House of Justice, which has its seat at the Baha’i World Centre in Haifa. The election is held every five years.

Baha’i elections are distinctive in that there are no nominations, no campaigning, and no discussion about which individuals should be elected.

The delegates to the International Baha’i Convention - members of all the Baha’i national governing bodies around the world - vote by secret ballot for the nine people they believe best suited for membership on the supreme institution of their Faith.

The Baha’i writings state that voters should try to choose people “of selfless devotion, of a well-trained mind, of recognized ability and mature experience.”

For Baha’is, the Universal House of Justice is the highest religious authority. It guides the worldwide Baha’i community in its development and in its response to changing world conditions, provides for Baha’i pilgrimage, holds in trust and maintains the Baha’i holy places, and administers international Baha’i funds.

The election process began well over a year ago when Baha’is in some 100,000 localities around the world began meeting in district conventions to elect delegates to their own national conventions. At those gatherings, the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of each country is elected.

The members of those national councils gather as electors at the global level for the International Baha’i Convention, to be held from 29 April to 2 May 2008 in Haifa.

About 1,200 delegates are expected to attend the convention. Those unable to attend send ballots by mail.

The establishment of the institution of the Universal House of Justice was called for by Baha’u'llah Himself, the founder of the Baha’i Faith.

At the end of his letter, he pasted the following paragrahs, and I believe what we need is to support our nation and the Olympic Games peacefully and reasonably. (I added the title) Please visit this post 血犹未冷 from 最好金龟换酒 for further points.
