I Remember

　　I remember, I remember the house where I was born, the little window where the sun came peeping in at morn; he never came a wink too soon nor brought too long a day; but now, I often wish the night had borne my breath away。

　(一) 同义反译法

　　1. Only three customers remained in the bar。

　　酒吧间只有三个顾客还没有走。(不译：“还留着”或“还呆在那里”)

　　2. I'll be here for good this time。

　　这一次我再也不走了。(不译：“永远在此呆下去”)

　　3. Please keep the fire burning when I'm out。

　　我不在家的时候，别让炉子灭了。(不译：“我外出时，请让炉子继续烧着”)

　　4. "Wait, he is serious."

　　等等，他不是说着玩儿的。(不译：“等等，他是认真的。”)

　　5. "Now, Clara, be firm with the boy!"

　　听我说，克拉拉，对这孩子可不能心软。(不译：“……对这孩子要坚定”)

　　(二) 删减解释词

　　(四) 译词推陈出新

　　原译：当他可以大胆行动的时候，他发现自己除了一个情人所具有的那种普通的害怕之外，心里还充满怀疑、顾虑和踌躇。

　　改译：等到他不妨放胆去追求的时候，他却迟疑不定，顾虑重重。至于一般堕入情网的人那种常有的提心吊胆的心理，那就更是难免的了。

　　(五) 解释性添词

　　"George, I'm ashamed of you! George, I couldn't have believed you would have done it! I always knew you to be a rolling stone that gathered no moss; but I never thought you would have taken away what little moss there was for Bagnet and the children to lie upon," said Mrs. Bagnet。

　　(七) 精炼译词

　　A new dignity crept into his walk。

　　原译：走路的姿态不知甚么时候开始给人一种庄重的印象。

　　改译：走起路来，不觉平添了几分尊严。

　　(八) 删削"When"字

　　1. When he saw me, he was startled。

　　他看见我，吓了一大跳，(不译：当他看见我的时候……)

　　2. "When your gals takes on and cry, what's the use of cracking on them over the head, and knocking on them round?"

　　“你那些女黑奴哭得那么伤心，你还拿鞭子没头没脑的抽，把她们打得死去活来，那有什么用呢？”(不译：当你那些女黑奴哭得那么伤心的时候，你还拿鞭子……)

　　(九) 感叹词的不同译法

　　1. "O, don't mother! I should like the flowers; do give them to me; I want them!" "Why, Eva, your room is full now."

　　“妈妈，别这样﹗我喜欢这些花，把花给我吧，我要﹗” “得了吧，伊娃，你屋里的花都满了。”

　　2. "Well, that's odd!" said Marie. "What in the world do you want that for?"

　　“哟，真是怪事﹗”玛利说，“你干嘛非要这个不可？”

　　(十) 顺拆法

　　His delegation agreed with the Executive Director/ that the fund should continue working/ for a better understanding of the interrelationship between economic, social and demographic factors。

　　原译：他的代表团同意执行主任关于该基金会应继续为更好地了解经济、社会和人口的相互关系而努力的意见。

　　改译：他的代表团同意执行主任的意见，认为该基金会应继续努力，以求更好地了解经济、社会和人口这三方面的相互关系。

【口语】怒火冲天

　　今天要讲的三个习惯用语都是和人的情绪有关，特别是愤怒的情绪。

　　1. lose your cool 发火，大发雷霆

　　Lose就是失去的意思。Cool通常做冷或者是凉解释。不过在这个习惯用语里它是冷静的意思。中文里面就有现存的相同的说法。那就是“失去冷静”。试想一个人如果失去了冷静，岂不是在生气吗？Lose your cool正是“大发雷霆”的意思。

　　我们来看个例子。假定约翰在开车；正在等红灯。突然一辆车子从后面撞了上来。约翰下了车来，走到后面开车的人面前，指着他的鼻子大骂。

　　例句-1：I am afraid I lose my cool. I call the other guy some nasty names and jumped out like he was ready to fight. But then a traffic cop arrived on the scene and managed to calm us down. And it turned out the damage wasn't all that bad。

　　“愤怒”的情绪

　　我当时失去了冷静，把那个家伙臭骂一顿。他也从车子里出来，好像准备动手。不过那个时候一位交通警到达了现场。他设法让我们的情绪都平静下来。后来我们发现车子的损害并没有多厉害。

　　说到这里，还有一个习惯用语要在这里顺便提一提。那就是，blow your cool。 Blow是吹的意思，但是blow your cool和lose your cool有着相同的含义。

　　2. hopping mad 怒不可遏；狂怒

　　Hopping是跳的意思，mad是生气的意思。生气得跳了起来，不就是中文说的气得跳脚？或者是暴跳如雷吗？现在我们再看看这句话在英语里是怎么用的。保罗描述了昨天在他家里发生的事。

　　例句-2：My mom and dad were hopping mad when they looked at my brother's report card from school and saw that he was failing in arithmetic and history, so that they made him stay home after school for a month instead of going out with his friends。

　　昨天我爸爸和妈妈看到弟弟的成绩单里算术和历史都不及格的时候，他们都暴跳如雷。他们不准我弟弟一个月之内外出去找朋友玩，放学以后只能呆在家里。

　　3. fit to be tied 十分恼火；暴跳如雷

　　Fit是合适，适宜的意思。Tied是绑起来的意思。Fit to be tied，当然就是应该绑起来的意思。可想而知，这个人所生的气该是多大了，到了应该将他绑起来的地步。看来hopping mad那种生气的人碰上了fit to be tied那种生气的人，最好还是忍让一些：好汉不吃眼前亏么。让我们来看看怎么应用这个习惯用语的。这个例子听起来都有点让人胆颤心惊。

　　例句-3：Joe was really fit to be tied one night when he saw his best girl friend out with a big good looking guy. Later he felt pretty stupid, when he found out that the guy she was with was her older brother。

　　有一天晚上，乔看到他的女朋友跟一个高达英俊的男子在一起的时候，他实在是气疯了。可是后来他发现那个男人原来是他女朋友的哥哥。于是他觉得自己是个傻瓜。

【美文欣赏】真正的爱

One True Love

He never believed that true love existed.

His parents divorced (离婚) when he was young and he didn’t think that true love was able to survive in today’s world.

He was proven wrong.

His grandparents were always supportive to the kids and tried to help them when their parents divorced. He knew they loved each other, he just wasn’t sure it was true love. He had never heard them say, “I love you” or show any affection other than hugging. They had been married for over fifty years and he thought that their true love was gone.

But again he was wrong. His grandfather, Ralph, was struck ill in his junior year of college and he didn’t know how serious it was until he fell and hurt his hip (臀). While in the hospital, the doctors found out a tumor (瘤) in his lungs. They told him that he had lung cancer and due to previous illnesses, they could not operate and he was too weak for chemotherapy (化疗).

It was around Thanksgiving and by Christmas his condition worsened. The cancer spread and in late January his sister away at college too, called him crying and said she was on her way home because the doctors told our family that their grandfather had only a week to live, that by the weekend he would no longer be with them. Their family came in from around the country and stayed next to his side.

It was there he realized that true love does exist today and will survive beyond death. Every night as his grandfather grew more fragile, he would whisper sweet words to grandmother, Madge. The night before he died grandmother was walking out of his room and he said to her “I love you Madgie baby”.

The next morning he received a phone call at work that grandfather had passed during the night. Throughout his short battle with cancer, he realized how much two people can love each other and he realized how much it means to be loved and give love. It is the greatest gift on earth and it lasts beyond life because you never forget your one true love.

【中文译文】

他从不相信世上存在真正的爱。

很小的时候他的父母就离婚了，他认为当今世界上真正的爱是不可能存在的。

后来的事实证明，他错了。

父母离婚后，他的祖父母一直支持他和妹妹，并尽力帮助他们。他知道他们相互爱恋着。他只是不能确信那是否是真正的爱。他从未听他们说过“I love you”，除了拥抱外，他们也没爱情的其它表示。他们结婚已经五十多年了，他想他们的真爱早已经烟消云散了。

但是他又错了。大三时，他的祖父病了。他不知道祖父的病情有多严重，直到祖父跌倒，伤了臀部。在医院里，医生发现祖父的肺部有一个肿瘤。医生告诉祖父，他得了肺癌。由于先前的疾病，医生不能给他做手术；他太虚弱，也不能化疗。

事情发生在感恩节前后，到圣诞节时，祖父的病情恶化，癌病毒迅速扩散。一月末，也在外地上大学的妹妹哭着给她打了个电话，说，她在回家的路上，因为医生告诉我们家人我们的祖父只能活一周了，到周末他会离他们而去。他们的家人从全国各地回来，围在他的身边。

就是在祖父身边，他才认识到当今世界上真正的爱确实存在着，并且可以超越死亡。每天晚上，当他的祖父变得越来越虚弱时，他会用甜蜜的话语同他的马奇祖母低声交谈。就在祖父去世前的晚上，当祖母走出他的房间时，祖父对祖母说“I love you，马奇贝贝！”

第二天早晨，上班时他收到一个电话：他的祖父在夜里去世了。在他的祖父与癌症病魔的短暂抗争中，他认识到两位老人相互爱得是多么深，他还认识到被爱和爱意味着什么。这是世界上最伟大的礼物，它将超越生命而永存，因为你永远也不会忘记你的一次真正的爱。

　　Waste Time at the Proverbial Water-cooler

　　Some people waste a large percentage of their day “chatting it up” in the workplace. Instead, get your work done, and get out。

　　很多人会把一大块工作时间浪费在茶水间里和别人八卦。应该这样做：接完水，转身出门，坐回到位子上去。

　　接受不必要的任务指派

　　I will say “No” where appropriate to tasks that are outside my domain. After all, you can’t get your work done if you are doing everyone else’s job。

　　面对我职责范围以外的任务，我会果断说“不”。毕竟，如果连自己的事都没做好，又怎么能去做别的事呢？

　　Start Before I Finish

　　半途而废

　　I will complete tasks to done, before starting new ones. Better to have finished the few important ones, that to have started lots of little ones。

　　一个任务没完成以前，我不会开始做新的。先把最重要的几件事做完，剩下的零碎琐事就好办了。

Return the Money?

A man tossed around in bed at midnight, and his wife asked him why he did so.

“Tomorrow is the last day that I must return the money I owe John, our neighbor. But I have no $300, so I can't sleep.”

“Oh, for that reason.” His wife got off from the bed and went to open the window. She cried toward the neighbor’s house loudly, “Hi, John, Listen! My husband won't return your money tomorrow.”

Then she closed the window and went back to the bed and said to his husband, “Now you can sleep well. It is his turn to toss around in bed, dear.”
